Spanish Street Slang

MexicanosSo you walk past a couple Mexicans on the street and they say something to you in Spanish and then laugh.  Wouldn’t you like to know what they said?  Was it a compliment or a slur?  There are many words and phrases in the Spanish language that have more than one meaning…and we can innocently embarrass ourselves if we aren’t aware of them.  Take the phrases “mucho calor” and “mucho caliente”.  Both mean “very hot” but calor refers to temperature, like the weather, and caliente refers to spicy or sexy.  So next time you say one of these phrases, be sure you mean what you say or you might find yourself in a delicate position!

Of course there is the other potentially embarrassing word “huevos” which means eggs in Spanish.  This is also a slang term for men’s balls!  So next time you want to ask the waiter if he has “huevos,”  better to ask if “huevos” are on the menu!  It seems that a lot of these double meanings have a sexual connotation.  It is part of the daily humor and fun to use if you are wanting a laugh but in some cases, the joke may be on you.  If you are relaxed and know what you are saying anyway, conversation can be most enjoyable!

Oops, I have been saying “mucho caliente” when referring to the hot weather. Thanks for this, I’ll make sure I use calor now!
